As a starter of this lesson, write down everything that you can come up with about the atom.
- Matter consists of atoms
- Atoms cannot be broken down by chemical reaction
- Atoms can be broken down by physical reaction (eg, bombarding electron)
- Atoms consists of protons, electrons and neutrons
- Atom is a basic chemical building block of matter
- Electron in atom has a negative electrical charge
- Each proton has a positive electical charge
- Each neutron is electrically neutral
- Overall, atoms is neutral
- Almost all of the ,ass of an atom is in its nucleus
- Almost all of the volume of an atom is occupied by electrons
- Different number of protons determines the element
- Varying the number of neutrons results in isotopes
If you are able to write this much, you'll be fine for the rest of the lesson. Hehehe.
Let say you have 2 isotopes, you cannot identify specific isotope using only the chemical symbol.
How do we represent an isotope???
For example: Carbon 13
Atoms will become charged particles called ions.
During reactions, atoms will often either lose or gain electrons.
Ions are written in a very similar way to isotope but they include the charge on the ion as well. Can you fill in the tables below??
For sodium ion, the number of proton is 11 (no changes), however, the number of electron is 10 (less 1). Thus, the number of neutrons would be 12
Fill this table by yourself. Test your own understanding =)
I hope this lesson is beneficial for you and your revision.
